Panel description:

This panel brought together three practitioners and thinkers at different stages of life and clinical experience to explore ageing, dependency, and what it means to work therapeutically across a generational divide.

I brought my clinical experience of working with older people to explore the psychoanalytic pessimism about ageing, first articulated by Freud, and how this legacy may continue to shape who is offered treatment and on what terms. I reflected on how early psychic experiences of dependency, loss, endings, and the competing life and death drives can re-emerge with particular vividness in the therapeutic relationship with an older client — and how these dynamics are registered in the countertransference of a younger therapist.

The panel recording is under consideration for publication.
